Layer across libraries
Blend instruments from any library in a single patch. Floe's three-layer architecture, each with its own controls, allow for creating hybrid textures.
A broken grand piano, played with everything except the keys. Mutant Piano captures the sounds of its brutal final recording session, from colossal impacts of metal dropped on the strings and grating wire scrapes to melodic soundboard textures and tempo-synced percussion loops. Dark, dramatic and deeply playable, it was designed by BAFTA-nominated composer Richard Wells — 318 samples and 300+ production-ready presets, housed in a powerful engine for everything from quick tweaks to full-blown custom sound design.

Powered by Floe
A free platform for finding, performing and transforming sounds — layers, FX, granular and more (CLAP/VST3/AU).
Mutant Piano’s unique sound-sources are versatile far beyond just one-off sound effects. Create multifaceted spine-chilling impacts, vast atmospheric worlds with fluctuating acoustic timbres, delicate tonal moments, lively and tense percussion loops, driving pulses, and weird, mutated textures. You can create whole compositions in varied styles, from horror, action and dark drama through to ambient.
Use Mutant Piano’s 318 categorised samples in Floe’s 3 layers to build your own acoustic-hybrid sounds. Transform tones with powerful granular synthesis, looping and effects. Control every aspect of the ADSR envelopes, filters, LFOs and tuning. Effortlessly vary presets with the innovative random variation strip.
Floe, the engine that powers Mutant Piano, has been massively expanded specifically for this product, adding granular synthesis, arpeggiators, loop slices and a refined workflow. As the 300+ presets show, it’s easy to build performable instruments that push the samples well beyond their original scope.
Load any of Mutant Piano’s samples into a layer and transform it into a cloud of grains: freeze melodic moments, create chaotic textures. Choose between 2 modes: granular playback, with speed-controllable movement across the sample; or fixed playback, which isolates a point in the sample. Granular is per-layer, meaning you can blend granulated layers with regular-playback layers.
Diverse tempo-synced rhythmic loops were captured in the original recording session; these play at your DAW's tempo via Mutant Piano’s built-in slicing. The slices run through the arpeggiator, where you control the velocity, length and rate of each step. The arpeggiator works on any sound, too: arpeggiate tonal elements and chords.
Sourced from a Hampstead piano shop just before it was due to be disposed of, our grand piano had lost its legs and keys, but its rich, resonant tone remained. Transported to Air-Edel Studios in West London, and propped up on stools, it made its final performance.
Armed with nails, chains, wires, metal objects, beaters, balls, and crucially, the Air-Edel brass doorstop, the team recorded every available part of the piano. Around 3 hours of recording yielded a remarkable range of material: massive hits, impacts, terrifying scrapes, delicate harmonics, and skillful tempo-synced rhythms.
Richard Wells, composer Robert Foster, multi-instrumentalist Andy Reynolds and engineer Nick Taylor captured something that truly hasn’t been heard before. The results were so good that these samples have found a place in pretty much every score Richard has written since. Years later, we've painstakingly crafted them into a virtual instrument that goes far beyond the original recordings.
BAFTA-nominated composer and sound designer Richard Wells has spent over 20 years writing music for feature films, games and TV, notably BBC's Being Human and Total War: Warhammer II. As Mutant Piano's principal designer, from recording to presets, his experience and attention to detail shines through in every aspect. Richard worked closely with Sam Windell, FrozenPlain and Floe's creator, shaping sounds and software into a diverse and intricate production tool.
Mutant Piano runs inside Floe, our powerful, free open-source plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Blend instruments from any library in a single patch. Floe's three-layer architecture, each with its own controls, allow for creating hybrid textures.
Create advanced rhythmic performances. Each layer can run its own arpeggiator — different rates, rhythms and patterns playing against each other.
Stretch, freeze and reshape any instrument into evolving clouds and textures — even multisampled instruments.
Eleven high-quality, reorderable effects — including pro-standard reverb and delay, and covolution reverb with creative IRs.
Four macro knobs for expressive performance of multiple parameters. MIDI CC, sustain pedel, undo/redo, A/B comparison for preset edits, visual EQs and a random variation generator.
Floe is a companion project to FrozenPlain — totally free and open source for longevity and ethical service to the music-making community.
Designed from the ground up for Floe v2.
